It is one of the most important infection control measures that take place in any healthcare facility.<\/p>\n<p>Hand washing is the single most effective way to prevent and control the spread of infections. You can easily spread certain &#8220;germs&#8221;, like viruses and bacteria. \u00a0Good hand hygiene will reduce the risk of things like flu, food poisoning and healthcare-associated infections being passed from person to person.<\/p>\n<p>Hand Hygiene Day, celebrated every year on the 5<sup>th<\/sup> May, assembles people around the world to increase adherence to hand hygiene especially in health care services. Therefore, protecting health care workers and patients from infections.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-936\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lshdental.co.uk\/hillcroft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/1-hand-washing-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"Hand Washing\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lshdental.co.uk\/hillcroft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/1-hand-washing-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lshdental.co.uk\/hillcroft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/1-hand-washing.jpg 456w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The main goal of the Global Hand Hygiene Day campaign is to recognize that handwashing is one of the most effective actions you can take to reduce the spread of pathogens and prevent infections, including the current COVID-19 virus.<\/p>\n<p>In Particular, hand hygiene\u00a0is a way of cleaning your hands so that you greatly reduce potential pathogens on your hands. It is considered a key measure for reducing the risk of transmitting infection among patients and health care workers.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the 2020 campaign, WHO and partners aim to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make hand hygiene a global priority<\/li>\n<li>Inspire hand hygiene and behaviour change<\/li>\n<li>Engage with health care workers in their role in clean care and the prevention of infections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-938\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lshdental.co.uk\/hillcroft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/2-WHO-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"WHO Hand Washing\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lshdental.co.uk\/hillcroft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/2-WHO-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lshdental.co.uk\/hillcroft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/2-WHO.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><u>What are the Steps of Hand Washing?<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Step 1: Wet your hands and apply enough liquid soap to create a good lather.<\/p>\n<p>Step 2: Rub Palms Together.<\/p>\n<p>Step 3: Rub the Back of Hands.<\/p>\n<p>Step 4: Interlink Your Fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Step 5: Cup Your Fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Step 6: Clean the Thumbs.<\/p>\n<p>Step 7: Rub Palms with Your Fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Step 8: Rinse your hands free of the soap under running water<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-937\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lshdental.co.uk\/hillcroft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/2-steps-of-washing-300x208.gif\" alt=\"Steps of Hand Washing\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" \/><\/p>\n<p><u>Why should you do this?<\/u><\/p>\n<p>We are estimated to have around 1,500\u00a0bacteria\u00a0living on each square centimetre of skin on\u00a0our hands. This is in areas such as underneath the fingernails and between the fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Lathering and scrubbing\u00a0hands\u00a0creates friction, which helps lift dirt, grease, and microbes from skin. Microbes are present on all surfaces of the\u00a0hand, so the entire\u00a0hand should be scrubbed for at least\u00a020 seconds.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-939\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lshdental.co.uk\/hillcroft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/4-missed-areas-292x300.jpg\" alt=\"Areas Missed When Washing Hands\" width=\"292\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lshdental.co.uk\/hillcroft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/4-missed-areas-292x300.jpg 292w, https:\/\/lshdental.co.uk\/hillcroft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/4-missed-areas.jpg 520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 292px) 100vw, 292px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We should wash\u00a0our\u00a0hands\u00a0before:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eating<\/li>\n<li>After arriving at work<\/li>\n<li>After coughing or blowing your nose<\/li>\n<li>Before making or eating food<\/li>\n<li>After using the restroom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you look at these factors, on average you\u00a0should\u00a0be\u00a0washing\u00a0your\u00a0hands\u00a0at least 11\u00a0times a day\u00a0(3 x before eating, 8 x after using the toilet).
